Rwanda, a small East African country should not be overlooked by roasters and coffee lovers. Known as the Land of a Thousand Hills, its production of high-quality, high-altitude coffee goes side-by-side with its fight against poverty. And while it’s not one of Africa’s largest producing countries, Rwanda is positioning itself as a world-class specialty coffee origin and the delicious flavours of its coffee back this up.

This particular lot was produced at the Coocamu washing station situated in the Rutsiro district, in the Western province sector of Musasa, on the shores of Lake Kivu in Rwanda. The Coocamu Cooperative was founded by 368 smallholder farmers in 2010 and the Cooperative has expanded to over 540 members of whom 35% are women. Before Coocamu was formed, farmers were struggling to find a nearby coffee washing station where they could bring their harvested cherries. Transport cost was high and production in the area was low.

The bulk of production comes from small family owned farms where coffee is cultivated on just a few acres of land intercropped with soy beans. Access to a modern washing station lead way to improvements in both the economic stability in the local area and the livelihood of the rural farmers through the production of high-quality coffees. Coocamu follows and fulfills all quality control steps; hand sorting, cherry floating, dry fermentation, grading and under shade drying — creating excellent conditions to produce high-quality beans that we love to roast and consume.

This roast is very well suited to manual and automated drip as well as immersion style brewing (french press, AeroPress).

As a limited edition, this Rwandan single origin coffee is only available in 454 g bags, while quantities last.
