Have you ever tasted a green fruit coffee? Now’s your chance!…

BBCR purchased a small amount of green coffee originating from unripened beans, known as Fruto Verde, from our direct trade partner Perdido Coffee. The farmers and cultivators at Perdido pride themselves in selecting and handpicking the cherries at its peak of ripeness. Before processing the coffee, any green cherries are manually removed from the red cherries, collected and set aside. Across the coffee sector, producers face no shortage of challenges to maintain profitability. One of them is the question of what to do with unripe cherries, as historically, every green cherry harvested represents lost potential income. Not this time.

While unripe cherries haven’t developed all of the potential sugars to produce a cup profile that is sweet and complex, Fruto Verde contains high levels of chlorogenic acid and caffeine - two substances that have been linked with a number of notable health benefits including regulating glucose and insulin, decreasing blood pressure, protecting against heart disease, reducing inflammation, and improving overall cardiovascular function, among others.

At BBCR, Fruto Verde is roasted using a darker roast profile to minimize undesired astringency and acidic attributes and introduce flavours more associated with the process of roasting. The result is a strong cup, with bitter cocoa notes and a stone fruit finish.

A one time opportunity and limited release, this coffee is sourced directly from Nicaragua and each batch is freshly roasted to order in Gatineau, Quebec.
