¡ Café a la mexicana por favor !

Café de Olla
For Spring Break 2021, we bring you a taste of Mexico! Why not try this recipe at home for a traditional Mexican coffee?

You wish you could be under the sun? So do we… But we all know it is not that easy this year. However, there is a way to bring Mexico to your cup of coffee for sure with the Café de Olla.

Have you heard about the way coffee can be brewed in Mexico? Well it is definitely worth a try especially if you are the kind of coffee drinker who likes to put some flavour in your cup.

But what do you add in that cup?
The two main ingredients you will add are piloncillo and cinnamon. If you don’t like either (providing you know what piloncillo is), don’t go any further. This one is not for you!

But for those who are curious to know what piloncillo is, it is a type of sugar you can get in small cones but if you don’t have it, fear not! You can replace it with brown sugar.

Why is this different? Coffee with brown sugar and cinnamon doesn’t sound that exotic, eh?
Because the process is different! You don’t brew your coffee and then add the two other ingredients; you add them to the coffee and then brew it… So, the coffee you get is wonderfully full of added flavours…

Not convinced? Try it yourself! And here is one of the recipes you can follow:

Mexican Coffee

8 cups of water
1 cup of piloncillo or brown sugar
2/3 cup of Mexico Single Origin
1 cinnamon stick
1 orange or lime peel if you feel like it!

  1. Boil the water and add the sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves.
  2. Add the other ingredients. Turn off the heat and leave it brew for 10 mins.
  3. Remove the cinnamon and the peel (if you used one), and add the mixture into a French press.
  4. Press down slowly.
  5. Pour the coffee into your cup.
  6. Enjoy!

There you go! Now you can enjoy a coffee with a twist and taste the sun! ☺ For those who need a bit of Dutch courage, some people add Tequila to it… It is crazy what you can hide in a mug…

Stay curious!
